Biographical Details :
Lives and works in Paris and Pantin.
Born in 1990 in Prague, Tereza Lochmann began intensive artistic training at the age of 15, exploring various artistic techniques at the Vaclav Hollar School of Fine Arts, known for the 17th-century European engraver. She developed a particular passion for printmaking there.
She later enrolled at the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague (UMPRUM). However, she found the academic teaching there unappealing and decided to come to Paris, first for an Erasmus exchange at ENSAD and then at ENSBA, where her choice to exhibit her large "matrices" sparked some debate.
Since her arrival in France in 2014, she has engaged in various collaborations for exhibitions and the publication of her sketchbooks. She also began her "guerrilla" art interventions in public spaces. In 2018, she spent several months in residence in the Philippines.
During the same year, her work was recognized by the jury of the Révélations Emerige Grant, and her work was exhibited in the eponymous villa. In 2019, she received a AIMS grant (Artiste Intervenant en Milieu Scolaire, ENSBA/Fondation E. De Rothschild), during which her enjoyment of "co-creation" was confirmed. She dedicated her final thesis to outsider art and continued to maintain connections with artists and figures in this field. In 2019, she spent several weeks in the studio of Georges Widener in South Carolina.
In 2020, she had a creative residency at the Picasso Museum in Antibes, where an individual exhibition titled "Voir la Mer" was organized at Espace Les Arcades. Throughout 2020, she worked with students from the Paul Bert Elementary School in Sainte-Foy-la-Grande as part of the "Création en cours" program by Ateliers Médicis.
Artistic practice :
Tereza Lochmann's artworks result from a unique process combining printmaking/sculpture, painting, collage, and drawing. Her work subverts the classical practice of printmaking to create an experimental and vibrant contemporary medium. Her large wood engravings go beyond their utilitarian function as "matrices" to become "reliefs" displayed to the public.
The concepts of "recovery" and "assembly" are as integral to her processes as they are to her artistic approach. Using discarded wood, unused notebooks, or old maps, she reveals their histories and combines them with her own memories. She draws inspiration from fragments of legends, collected images, glimpses of experiences seen or lived, to construct unique narrative forms in touch with the most pressing current events. Her version of the medieval legend of Lady Godiva, created in late 2019, portrays a near-Femen figure protesting tax hikes.
While her imagination draws from numerous literary, poetic, cinematic, and pictorial references, she is also interested in outsider art, seeking to be inspired by the spontaneity and freedom characteristic of creators distant from academicism and trends. The idea of "encounter," both literally and figuratively, is also one of her driving forces. Her work stands in stark contrast, filled with contrasts that give it strength.
